What, No P-51 Mustang?

Only one fighter plane made the Plane & Pilot Top Ten Planes of All Time list, and it wasn’t the classic North American P-51.

Key Takeaways:

  • Plane & Pilot's "Top Ten Planes of All Time" list sparked controversy, mainly for omitting the P-51 Mustang.
  • The article defends the inclusion of another fighter on the list, citing its superior technology due to 70+ years of advancement over the P-51.
  • Despite the exclusion from the top ten list, the publication acknowledges the P-51's significance and beauty by linking to other features showcasing it.

Plane & Pilot’s list of The Top Ten Planes of All Time has pushed some buttons, for sure, but our not including the P-51 on that list was the biggest hot-button omission by far. There is one fighter on the Top Ten list, though, and it is, as they say in football, “bigger, better and faster,” but it’s also the product of 70-plus years of technology advancement since the Mustang first flew. And the P-51 changed the world, too. Check out the fighter we did select, and you decide for yourself. And thanks to all for the feedback! And lest you think we don’t love the P-51, check out last week’s Plane & Pilot Photo Of The Week and our big photo gallery salute to the P-51, featuring some of the greatest work by some of the greatest aerial photographers in the world. And how beautiful it is! Check out our Nine Most Beautiful Planes feature, too.
