Everybody knows that Piper built the Cub and Beechcraft makes the Bonanza, but did you know about the Piper Arapaho or the Beechcraft Lightning? Don’t be too hard on yourself if you didn’t. Neither one made it to serial production. They are hardly alone as aviation industry one-offs or castoffs. In fact we found a handful of similar planes from well known manufacturers that we didn’t know existed, like the Luscombe Phantom, a radial engine, high-wing taildragger that preceded the company’s well known Model 8. Luscombe built 25 of them, and they were tricky to land that Luscombe quickly changed gears. In many cases and for some sensible reasons, many of the planes you’ll discover in this quiz were never produced. Others were put into production but for one reason or the other never got much attention. Finally, there are a few models here that actually enjoyed a little success, though not enough to make them household names. Good luck!
