Technology changes fast these days, particularly when it comes to avionics. In the 14 years since the original Tecnam P2002 Sierra arrived on the scene, the options available for flight instrumentation have changed significantly. The Sierra Mark 2 will offer a much wider range of avionics configurations than its predecessor, from basic analog to Dynon or Garmin glass.

The Mark 2 update looks like it’s primarily devoted to expanding buyer options and tidying up the overall design. As part of the update, it will also have a larger cabin, more headroom and a canopy locking mechanism designed to reduce noise. There are also many, many more ways to customize the paint and upholstery.

Much of the original Sierra design remains unchanged. While the engine cowling has been reworked, the Mark 2 will still have the same 100hp Rotax engine as the original. Fuel consumption, range and speed look comparable with only a few negligible variations. The Mark 2 fuselage is a little lower and longer, giving it a bit more of a streamlined appearance. It also comes in slightly heavier with longer take-off and landing distances.

The first model of the Tecnam P2002 Sierra MkII is expected to be on display at the U.S. Sport Aviation Expo in Florida this coming January.
