The Stinson Vigilant is a two-seat liaison/observation plane powered by a Lycoming nine-cylinder radial engine rated at 285 hp. Its two occupants sit in tandem fashion surrounded by window side panels that slope outward to facilitate downward vision. The domed roof is made from transparent plastic material. In 1940, the Army Air Corps ordered better than 140 V-74s and gave them the designation of L-1. These were followed by a larger order of L-1As with their longer fuselage and increased gross weight. Other versions of the Vigilant were used as ambulances, glider pickup trainers, and floatplanes.
