The Mooney Mark 22 was the most radical in its class in that it offered the only pressurized cabin in a commercial single-engine plane. The Mustang was first introduced in 1967 and was dropped when Butler Aviation took over the Mooney line. The engine is a 310-hp Lycoming that is turbocharged for high-altitude operation and adequate power. The Mustang has flight characteristics similar to other Mooneys; however, special pilot training is required to assure proper management of the cabin pressurization system. Mooney had engineered all the necessary safety features into the cabin and door, which had to provide a good seal against the loss of air. Because the Mark 22 can be operated so easily and so high, it offers very fast airspeeds at very reduced fuel consumption. Though an important first, the Mooney Mustang Mark 22 enjoyed only meager success. Only 30 aircraft were sold before the model was withdrawn from production.
