The first model Lancair 200 was developed in 1984 and today, that prototype resides in the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) Museum in Oshkosh, WI. In the past decade, the name Lancair has come to represent industry leadership, a success based on an unrelenting commitment to quality and innovation. Lancair has played a key role in defining the actual character of this growing kit plane industry, a market segment that now outsells the production market fleet by more than 3 to 1. Today, there are more than 1,870 Lancairs sold in more than 34 countries, on 5 continents.
In 1985 Lance Neibauer designed the retractablegear Lancair 235. The 235 was designed to go as fast as possible and provide economical operation in crosscountry comfort for two full-size adults. As if this wasn’t enough, Neibauer wanted the slippery-looking craft to have very docile flight characteristics and do it all powered by the Lycoming 0-235 which put out only 100-115 hp. Results of the finished product were astounding. Not only did the 235 stand up to its expectations, it also cruised at better than 200 mph and burned something in the neighborhood of 6 gph. The design evolved into the Lancair 320/360 and then finally into the Legacy. A fixed gear version, the Legacy FG is also available.
