The Nakajima Navy 97 was a single-engine torpedo bomber and was code-named "Kate." Housing a 700-hp nine-cylinder air-cooled radial engine, the Model 97 is easily identified by its continuous canopy under which two to three crewmen were seated. This torpedo plane also featured cantilevered wings with taper on both the leading and trailing edges and dihedral on the outer sections only. Its flaps were exceptionally short. The main landing gear were inward-retractable, and the tail wheel was nonretractable. Armament consisted of two 7.7mm machine guns mounted in the cowling and one or two movable machine guns of the same caliber in the rear cockpit. An 18-inch torpedo or bombs up to 1,100 lbs. could be carried under the fuselage.
