When the runaway (and runway) hit aviation app ForeFlight added a new feature recently, company co-founders Jason Miller and Tyson Weihs shared that they weren't sure what the reception would be for it. They were in for a surprise.
After just three weeks, Weihs told Plane & Pilot, the new logbook feature had amassed more than a million entries.
The feature has a number of sub-features that make logging easier than ever, and ForeFlight aims to add more goodies soon. I've been sworn to secrecy, but expect cool things.
The basic idea of the logbook is to allow pilots to log their flight time. It then will automatically keep track of currency for everything from night landings to hold procedures. Logbook even will automatically log your flights for you. You can enter Hobbs times, to jibe your logbook with the meter on the plane, you can add passengers and remind yourself (or your accountant) that they were business associates along to close a big deal or family members tagging along to spend a day at the shore. Lots of users are adding photos to their entries, too, and who wouldn't wish they had pics associated with their first solo, one from giving one of your kids, or a grandparent, their first ride, or one that captures the look of relief and joy following that successful check ride. Logbook is a cross-platform feature; it will work with your iPhone, iPad or even ForeFlight Web (a development that deserves a story of its own).
The logbook feature is available with ForeFlight Basic Plus and Pro Plus, one that, Weihs said, lots of users are finding too tempting to pass up.
