Since Burt Rutan made the advantages of a canard design configuration so apparent with his line of composite aircraft, builders have been taking the ball and running with it in order to improve a good thing. The Berkut is perhaps the epitome of the design evolution. The structure has evolved from the carved, foam-core with applied wet-lay-up fiberglass into vacuum-formed wet-lay-up composite sandwich construction. This method of component construction greatly increases part integrity and strength, and it significantly reduces weight of the finished product. The Berkut has a fullyretractable landing gear and many other significant changes that have improved the original concept. The Berkut is no longer available as a kit or in plan form.
