Zenith Aircraft Hangar Day

Hundreds of people showed up on September 19, 2014, for the pre-Hangar Day activities, and on Saturday for demo flights, factory tours and encounters with Zenith Aircraft kit builders and company staff. Sebastien Heintz, president of Zenith, said: "By all accounts and measurements, the 23rd annual Hangar Day was an incredible winner. Most felt they had learned a great deal, and everyone enjoyed the camaraderie." Among the highlights of the two-day event was the arrival of EAA's two Zenith aircraft. One was an EAA staff-built version of the CH 750 Cruzer, and the second was the One Week Wonder CH 750 that was completed during AirVenture with assistance from over 2,500 people. Zenith also held their first annual STOL aircraft competition. Seven pilots participated, and the winner of the STOL competition was Jan Eggenfellner flying a Zenith STOL CH 750 powered by a Viking 110 engine, a popular Honda-based auto conversion. His takeoff measured 109 feet, and his precision landing measured 110 feet, for a combined winning score of 219 feet. Visit www.zenithair.com.

Learn To Fly Blog

The Learn to Fly Blog is a place for pilots and student pilots to learn and share insights about the foundations of flight and flight training. The blog is a great resource that aids students in acquiring aeronautical knowledge to be successful during and after training. Pilots and flight instructors will be able to offer their insights into the process, as well as provide encouragement to newer members of the aviation community. Visit www.learntoflyblog.com.

Free Aspen Synthetic Vision

Aspen Avionics received FAA approval to offer a free trial of 10 in-flight hours of Aspen's Evolution Synthetic Vision (ESV). All new Aspen EFD1000 Pro PFD purchasers will receive the free ESV trial with their display. "We think once aircraft owners experience the enhanced situational awareness Aspen's Evolution synthetic vision provides, they will better understand its value and will invest in the upgrade," said Mark Ferrari, vice president of sales and customer support, Aspen Avionics. Priced at $2,995, ESV is an optional software upgrade to the Evolution Flight Display System and presents a real-time, three-dimensional view of terrain, obstacles and traffic. When ESV flight hours exceed 10 hours of usage, the next time the unit is powered on, the trial will self-disable. To reinstate ESV, the option must be purchased. Visit www.aspenavionics.com.

Savage Cub Renaming Contest

SportairUSA has launched a contest to rename the Savage Cub-S. Top two prizes are an Apple iPad Air and an iPad Mini with Retina display, with one-year subscriptions to ForeFlight. The name "Savage Cub-S" is a callback to the original Piper Super Cub, but much improved. It features a 180 hp Titan Stroker engine, Alaskan bushweels and extended landing gear, and can take off in just 60 feet. The word "Cub" is trademarked in the U.S., thus the search for a new name. Flying STEM Classroom

Barrington Irving is launching Flying Classroom, an interactive STEM+ learning adventure spanning three continents. Irving, a National Geographic Emerging Explorer who holds the Guinness World Record as the youngest person to fly solo around the world, will pilot Inspiration III, a business jet provided by Executive Air Services in Miami. Irving and his crew will visit North America, Asia, Indonesia and Australia, exploring real-life applications of Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, history, geography and humanities (STEM+) through 16 powerful ground, air and sea expeditions. Inspiration III will travel to all seven continents over three consecutive school years. Throughout each flight, students will have virtual access to Irving's adventures through videos and a blog. Students in schools that utilize the Flying Classroom curriculum, which is aligned to the National Common Core Standards and Next Generation Science Standards, will also study STEM+ subjects relevant to each expedition as they track the Flying Classroom team. Sennheiser & STEM

Fred Heyne of Jacksonville, Florida, was the winner of a Sennheiser S1 Passive headset and an iFlightPlanner Premier Annual Membership after naming a SkyWay over Chiang Mai, Thailand, after his grandsons Nicholas and Anthony Buchanan. Contestants were asked to identify their favorite flight route over the Pacific, Atlantic or Indian Oceans, and name it after a person or company to be entered into the prize drawing. Sennheiser has supported Think Global Flight since 2012, when Captain Judy Rice, an aviator and champion of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) education among children, announced her plans to embark on a global flight to help educate hundreds of children around the world, inspiring them to learn more about aviation and increase awareness of STEM topics. "Sennheiser recognizes the significance of real-world applications for STEM," commented David Dunlap, Director, Sennheiser Aviation. "The efforts and objectives of the Think Global Flight team are very much in line with Sennheiser Aviation's own values, aimed at supporting the aviation community and helping to grow the pilot population." Solar-Electric "Sun Flyer" Continues Flight Tests

Aero Electric Aircraft Corp. (AEAC) has entered the next phase of development for its solar-electric training aircraft called Sun Flyer. AEAC, in conjunction with its development partner, Bye Aerospace, is performing initial R&D flight-test operations with the solar-electric technology demonstrator at Centennial Airport near Denver, Colorado. Flight tests in the single-seat aircraft will continue for the next six to nine months while the two-seat prototype Sun Flyer is being assembled. George Bye, CEO of AEAC, said initial test results are confirming the overall benefits of solar-electric propulsion, especially the very low operating costs. Additional benefits include reduced maintenance due to fewer moving parts, low-noise flight, and solar recharging on the ground and in flight. AEAC is primarily targeting flight schools for Sun Flyer, the first U.S.-sponsored, practical, all-electric airplane serving the training, recreational and general aviation markets. The company is also collaborating with Redbird Flight Simulations and Spartan Aeronautical College to offer a comprehensive pilot training system. Visit www.aeac.aero and www.byeaerospace.com.
