CESSNA 170

The conventional-gear Cessna 170 was the forerunner of the 172/Skyhawk series in production until 1986. Basically, the 170 was a four-place, 145-hp version of the 140 series. It remained unchanged until 1953 when the engine cowling was redesigned and lengthened. Final alterations, made in 1955, increased the size of the rear windows, revised the tailwheel, and added an additional flap position. Of the 5,171 Cessna 170s that were built, more than 3,000 are found on the active list in the United States today while many others are still flying in Canada, Europe, and Latin America. Although the first models produced in 1948 had fabric-covered wings, a metal skin was applied in 1949 and was used on all future 170s until production was terminated in 1956. Although not speedy, it is still a good buy on the used aircraft market. It represents one of the lowest priced four-seaters available.
