Located in Afton, Wyo., Aviat specializes in sport and utility aircraft. The company manufactures two certified aircraft, the Husky and the Pitts, as well as the kit-built Eagle II. The Husky A1-A was certified in 1987 and based loosely on Piper's talented Super Cub. The tandem two-seater quickly became one of the world's most popular bush planes. The latest generation, the Husky A-1B continues the tradition. The sturdy taildragger has tremendous short and soft field abilities even with a healthy load and functions on wheels, floats or skis. Aviat refined the design in 2005, improving the ailerons and flaps, as well as offering the Husky with an optional 200 hp powerplant and composite, 82-inch propeller.
The Pitts is one of the world's great aerobatic aircraft and in fact the only FAA certified competition airplane made in the United States. Designed by the legendary Curtis Pitts in the mid-1940s, an early version of the unlimited category biplane now hangs in the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum in Washington, DC, as well as other museums around the world. The most current model of the +6G/-5G Pitts is the S-2C.
